Feast of the Juicy Proot

Theresa Angela Calimlim

Feast of the Juicy Proot is a visual reverence to the Filipina; the feminine aspect of our psyche, whether collectively or individually. Our flavour of nurturance, sensuality, self-sacredness, ritual, and pure deliciousness that is specific to the islands that birthed our ancestors, souls, and fruits.

For me, the calamansi is associated with care. It was rare to find them in 1990s Melbourne suburbia, unless we encountered somebody who was giving away a bag of fruit from their tree, whether it was at school pick up, or at a house party. It became a treat whenever our fridge happened to be stocked with it. My sister and I would watch my mum prepare calamansi juice or tea, with excitement and a sort of reverence for this special fruit that was uniquely from our culture.

Exploring the ideas of the mother, nurturance and ritual was born from meditating on what the calamansi meant to me, and this is the visual that emerged. It pays homage to the altar my mum would set up for the Feast of Fatima and transcends the limitations of sexual expression put on the feminine by the patriarchy.
